Bedroom at The Pump House

A break for wine lovers

Jilly Goolden, wine expert on the BBC’s Food & Drink show for 18 years, used to entertain us with her loquacious descriptions of wines tasting of ‘old socks’, ‘saddle soaped leather’ or ‘rubber’.

These days she lives in a beautiful Arts and Crafts house in the Ashdown Forest in Sussex and has just converted The Pump House, in her grounds, into an adorable little holiday bolthole for two. Guests are welcome to use Jilly’s outdoor pool on warm summer days.

If you would like to benefit from Jilly’s superior ‘nose’ (as it were!) time your visit to coincide with a Wine Room Experience, held in her house, where you will taste and discuss many different red and white varieties, as well as a couple of champagnes.

From The Pump House you can walk straight into the forest for walks (this is Winnie the Pooh country) and it’s an easy drive into the spa town of Tunbridge Wells.

* The Pump House costs from £399 per week (short breaks available outside high season). Book through
The five hour Wine Room Experience is held regularly and costs £125 per person including wines, tea and cakes, champagne and canapés. All the best things in life then… For details, visit
