Seeing trailers for this new film – due to hit cinema screens September 9th– has got me lusting after a visit to Washington State, in the USA’s Pacific Northwest, where it was filmed (if not Viggo Mortensen – how can he ever beat his Lord of the Rings ‘Aragorn’ look?!).
I had the pleasure of ogling some of Washinton’s glorious scenery for myself as a kid, when our family did a fly drive through the Rockies from Canada into the US. It’s a breathtaking mix of mountains, forests and rivers. Just the place to get back to basics. Which is what the family in this film do.
Mortensen plays the tough but loving father of six children who vows to bring them up to be extraordinary people by living in glorious isolation, learning to fend for themselves. But how will that prepare them for the real world? They find out when they have to return to the city…
